about
THE FIRST HALF MVPs
Out of the musically fertile borough of Queens, NY, comes a new collaboration known as THE FIRST HALF MVPs. Singer-songwriters and bon vivants Chet Setter and Nolan Rheingold condense the quality of a LP into the time it takes for an EP to unfold.
The band forges both an identity and a suite of songs from a chance meeting that may very well alter the course of modern popular music.
THE FIRST HALF MVPs debut recording, "That Championship Season" boasts two new originals each from Mssrs. Setter & Rheingold along with a deliciously insouciant cover of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”
Autumn 2006, France: during the Marseille Backgammon Invitational, Setter & Rheingold played to a draw and maintained a cool distance throughout the week on the Riviera. Their adversarial relationship changed a month later when both men found themselves on the same panel of an academic conference at the University of Munich exploring the role of postmodern architecture in 1960s Europe, and discovered they both had an affinity for the band Poco. After a brief stay as an op-ed columnist for a Tibetan daily, Setter returned stateside and resumed his residency at several watering holes in Long Island City, accompanied by Rheingold and mutual friend, actor Philip Bosco. While posting bail for an ex-girlfriend in the utopian Whippany, NJ, Rheingold reconnected with Guillaume Ayedell, bassist for mall punks Shipping & Handling. Ayedell eagerly embraced the musical notions of Setter and Rheingold, and he in turn brought in Vernon Jackson, former drummer for the short-lived early Aughts glam rock band, Hilarious Clinton, to round out the combo.
The result of this union are the recordings you find within. This EP is for fans of artistic hubris wrapped in self-deprecation, and swathed in shameless self-promotion.
